Counselling, what to expect....

First steps...

Starting counselling can feel a bit intimidating, and knowing what to expect can often ease some of that anxiety. In our first session, we'll talk about how we can work together and then explore what's on your mind and what you're hoping to achieve. It's really important to me that you feel comfortable and supported, as that’s key to making our time together as effective as possible.

Everyone's journey is unique, so we'll tailor the process to fit your individual needs and focus. Typically, this involves a few key steps:

  • Getting to know you: We'll spend some time getting to know each other, discussing your concerns, and clarifying what you hope to achieve in therapy.
  • Setting a focus together: Once we understand your needs, we'll collaborate to set a clear direction for our sessions.
  • Exploring and working through things: We'll use a range of approaches—such as Transactional Analysis, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or others—to support you in working towards your focus.
  • Checking in and adjusting: We'll regularly review your progress and make any necessary adjustments to ensure we're on the right path.
  • Saying goodbye: When you feel ready, we’ll talk about how to bring our sessions to a positive and supportive close.

If you’re unsure whether counselling is the right step for you, or if you’d prefer to try a few sessions before committing long-term, that’s completely okay.

Sessions last 50 minutes and are typically held weekly at a time and place that works for both of us.

BACP...What does this mean...?

BACP Registered Member- Katie Reid, Kounsell

When seeking counselling, it's crucial to choose a therapist registered with a professional body like the British Association for Counselling Psychotherapists (BACP). This ensures their qualifications, adherence to professional standards, and commitment to ethical practices. Moreover, if you encounter any concerns during therapy, a formal complaints process exists to address them.
